 Hello,

FIELDS

Change of venue -- we are NOT using Farrer Park.

The new location is in
Anchorvale<http://www.streetdirectory.com/asia_travel/travel/travel_id_16852/travel_site_90469/>[click
to see map, navigable]. The field is next to (or south of) the
Farmway LRT station, which is marked by the target cross-hair. While not a
purpose-built sports venue, the open field is large, generally flat and may
accommodate more playing fields than Farrer Park.

Coincidentally, the municipal authorities have plans for National Day
activities at the field during the same weekend -- Singapore's prime
minister is the guest of honour. We are required to tweak some of the
tourney schedule and field use around it. These are part of the conditions
for granting us access to the Anchorvale field.

*IMPORTANT* With the above in mind, we ask everyone to be on your best
behaviour throughout the tourney and especially Sunday during the National
Day ceremonies with the prime minister in attendance. This is definitely
non-negotiable. More details during the captains' meeting at Registration
Night.

Rest assured that everyone will get your usual quota of games and likely
more. We envisage 8am starts, both days; possibly 5/6pm end-time on
Saturday, and 6/7pm end-time on Sunday. The pools & schedules are being
worked out now. Feedback regarding pools & formats are welcome. [Yoshio's
desire for brutal games/scheduling is duly noted ;) ]

TRANSPORT

Anchorvale is 30-45 mins by public transport from the city or Little India
area.

   - subway/MRT -- $$2-S$3, North East Line (NEL aka "Purple"
Line)<http://www.sbstransit.com.sg/transport/trpt_nel_overview.aspx>plus
   LRT <http://www.sbstransit.com.sg/transport/trpt_lrt_overview.aspx>transfer
[click to open links]
   - taxi -- 4 pax, S$10-S$15, about 15-20+mins by taxi .
   - factor in some buffer time for ticketing , waiting etc. since it'll be
'peak hour' for about 400+ players converging on Anchorvale.

We think the public transport options are fine. If you plan your time with
some allowance, you should be ok. More information and travel advice will be
provided later.

ON-FIELD LOGISTICS

There will be water (bring your bottles/Colemans), ice and fruits. Portable
toilets. Large tents. Ambulance & paramedics on standby.

A doctor (maybe two), plus a physio, who will offer sports massage for a
fee. If anyone has special taping needs, please bring your own/additional
tape or purchase.

We are looking at providing lunch at the fields, both days -- likely Subway
sandwiches.
*IMPORTANT* If anyone on your team has special dietary restrictions (e.g.
halal, vegetarian etc.), please let us know by Monday 3rd August. We will
try to accommodate them as far as possible -- no guarantees that every
request may be met though.

NEARBY PUBLIC AMENITIES

   - Compass Point<http://www.fraserscentrepointmalls.com/malls/cmp/index.asp>mall
-- about 600m from the fields. Integrated with the Sengkang MRT
station. It gets extremely crowded on weekends.
   - Sengkang Sports & Recreation Centre (click here to see some
pix<http://www.post1.net/biow/entry/sengkang_swimming_complex_or_sengkang_sports_and_recreation_centre>)
-- 200m from the fields, swimming pool with slides, S$2 per entry. Gym. It
   gets extremely crowded on weekends.
   - McDonald's 24-hrs fast-food restaurant & drive-thru -- same complex as
the sports centre [yeah, kinda ironic, eh]
   - Brewbaker's kitchen & bar -- as above
   - juice & sandwich corner -- as above
   - 7-Eleven convenience stores x 2 -- as above and across the street

REGISTRATION NIGHT

Same venue as last year. The whole of the second level is reserved for us.

Where: Zsofi Tapas Bar www.tapasbar.com.sg
(their new website should be ready soon, but directions are still available
from this link)
           68 Dunlop Street
Little India area, behind Old Tekka Mall (now The Verge)

When: Friday, 7th August 2009, 7pm onwards.

*IMPORTANT* Team captains/reps, please attend to settle registrations &
fees, and receive team packs (see *note below).
Captains meeting at 10pm Singapore time (GMT +8hrs).

*Note: Players'goodie bags are distributed at the fields on Saturday.

   - All-night specials: Half pints and pints of Tiger Beer at S$5 and S$7
respectively. House-pours with soda mixers at S$5.
   - A single portion of Tapas will be served free with purchase of any
alcoholic drink other than the above promotional items. Other than that you
need to pay for your food.

SATURDAY NIGHT PARTY

Theme: Freedom
Yeah, we're told there isn't much in Singapore. So, here's a great chance
for you to show the few local players who attend parties what the concept is
all about ;P
Btw, Singapore is celebrating her 44th National Day on Sunday 9th August.

Venue: The Toucan Irish Pub @ 15 Duxton Hill
The Toucan doesn't have a website but click
here<http://www.google.com/search?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=1G1GGLQ_ENSG300&=&q=toucan+irish+pub+singapore&btnG=Google+Search>for
map/directions and some reviews. I'm told "we have the bar inside and
the garden outside (so technically still a block party)"!! Special deals
for food & drink being ironed out -- TBC.

The Duxton Hill and adjacent Tanjong Pagar & Chinatown areas offer a variety
of F&B and entertainment options.

BIDS & TEAMS

Many thanks to teams who submitted their registrations and deposits,
particularly those who did so on time -- much appreciated :)

Based on the registrations received, we are only looking at the Mixed
Division. Feedback regarding pools & formats are welcome.

Pending:

CUUP (China United Ultimate Party) -- roster received, deposit in transit(?)

Team Sizzle (Perth) -- roster received, pending deposit info/transfer(?)

Pilipinas -- partial roster information received, pending registration form
& deposit info/transfer(?)

Team India -- has room for several women. Any extra women out there? We're
helping to ask for pickups.

  Hi folks,

FIELDS

Apologies for the delay in updating. The attention of the Sports Council had
been totally focused upon the recent Asian Youth Games, which Singapore
hosted.

1. Farrer Park Sports Field
We are working with the Sports Council to try to get the fields ready.

2. Alternative fields
Discussions are underway with the authorities for a possible alternative
venue, about 30-45 mins from the city by public transport. The site may be
able to accommodate more playing fields.than Farrer Park.

FORMAT & GENDER RATIO

The majority of teams are bidding for the Mixed Division. We shall consider
the Open Division if there are at least 5-6 teams participating and subject
to the field capacity.

1. Mixed Division
A gentle reminder that the Mixed Division default ratio is 4 men & 3 women.
For the well-being of the ladies, we recommend all Mixed teams have at least
5-6 women on your rosters.
If you do not have enough women, please consider the Open Division.

2. Open Division
Gender ratio does not apply. Teams may field any combination of men and/or
women.

3. Format
At this point, we envisage 'normal' spread pools for the Sat round-robin
phase.

BIDS & TEAMS

1. Cap on number of teams
As mentioned before, subject to the field capacity, we may have to cap the
number of teams to possibly 20 teams total. We will know as soon as the
field situation is confirmed.

2. Team bids & seeding
In order to help us determine the bids & likely seeding as well as for
logistics, please submit your roster and any information you think may
affect your possible seeding. Please reply to this email or <
keekhoon.neo at gmail.com>.

Please visit our
website<http://www.singaporeultimate.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=237&Itemid=15>for
a list of the bids & interested teams

REGISTRATION & PAYMENT

As announced previously, fees are SGD100 per player

In order to register your bid formally, please:
(i) submit your roster; and
(ii) pay a deposit of at least SGD$500 per team (equivalent to the fees for
5 players)
by next Friday, 24 Jul 2009 (Singapore time).

* The deposit is refundable (less any applicable transfer charges) if your
team bid is unsuccessful.
* Teams may chose to pay the full team total at this time, OR pay the
balance (i.e. team total less the SGD$500 deposit) by the registration
party.
* Deposit is *forfeit* if the team withdraws from the tournament
*after*Friday, 24 Jul 2009 (Singapore time)

I will send the registration & payment form to team reps in a separate
email.

PICKUPS

Does any team besides Cambodia and India need players?
Are there any pickups looking for a team?
Please let me know and we'll see how we may help match players and teams.

We may have several pickups from Australia, Singapore and elsewhere itching
to play.

HOTELS / HOSTELS

No designated tourney hotel this year. However, for easier access to the
fields, we suggest staying in the Little India area and near the MRT-North
East Line <http://www.sbstransit.com.sg/transport/trpt_nel_overview.aspx>(aka
the "Purple Line"), a route on Singapore's subway network.

Please check out the information provided below, courtesy of Steinar Cramer:

----- < snip > -----

There are tons of backpacker places around the Little India area. They
probably don't take group bookings, but the prices are low enough that you
won't need a group rate. Other option is some of the hotels in the area.
Easiest thing is to check www.asiarooms.com. You could try Aspinals,
Broadway or Fortuna. There's also Hotel81 Bencoolen, and the Bencoolen.
They're not particularly fancy places, but that's what you get in the budget
category. Nicer hotels not too far from the fields include Hotel Rendezvous,
the Carlton Hotel ... but definitely more expensive. Best bet is to go onto
Asiarooms and just look through the map of the area, read the reviews, etc.

For the hostels, I can suggest a few places ... all are located max. 15-min
walk from fields (or 3-min. taxi ride):

The Inn Crowd (http://www.the-inncrowd.com/)
The Hive (http://www.
thehivebackpackers.com/<http://www.thehivebackpackers.com/>)
... one of the owners is somehow connected to Sing Ulti, and they may take
group bookings?
Prince of Wales (http://pow.com.sg/)
Hangout @ Mount Emily (http://www.
hangouthotels.com/<http://www.hangouthotels.com/>)
... this place is a bit more expensive (S$60 per night) but definitely a
step up from most backpacker places ... might actually be nicer than some of
the 3-star hotels in terms of room quality? Pretty popular, though, so would
have to book early.

I'll update again when additional details are available. If you have any
questions, please contact me.

  Greetings Asian Ultimate,

Some progress to update!!

Dates: confirmed 8-9 Aug

Fields:

1. Farrer Park remains our first option. Some re-turfing of the
work-affected areas has begun. We expect to know by early July the status of
any additional works.

Subject to the status of the public works and recovery of the re-turfed
areas, we may have to limit the tourney to 20 teams total, if there is space
for only 4/5 playing fields. However, if we are given the all-clear, then we
should be able to approximate the 6/7-field layout of the last two years.

2. We are working on securing a backup site that is significantly bigger
than Farrer Park (fingers crossed).

Bids:
Please send me your bids, indicating Mixed (4/3, 3/4) or Open division. This
is for initial planning purposes.

So far, we have interest from:
China (combine)
DiscIndo/Jakarta
Hong Kong
Malaysia (several teams)
Perth (2 teams)
Philippines (several teams)
Renegade

Fee: SG$100 per player.

That's it for now. Details of registration, team deposits/payment, deadlines
etc. to be announced later.

Many thanks for your patience!!

  Hi folks,

Many thanks for your replies & queries. My apologies for not replying
earlier. We understand the need to finalise details asap so that you may
make travel arrangements (and take advantage of some great offers I hear).
While I don't wish to bore you with our logistics issues, I think it best
that you are informed of our conundrum regarding dates and fields.

Dates: we are working on the basis it's on 8-9 Aug.

We are unable to confirm 100% because of concerns over the availability of
fields.

The Farrer Park fields (our preferred venue since 2007), which are one of
the few public sporting locations in Singapore suitable for an international
Ulti tourney, is controlled by the Singapore Sports Council (SSC). SSC has
offered us the fields for the 8-9 Aug weekend only -- no other dates are
available -- but with a critical proviso.

Another major government agency, the Land Transport Authority (LTA), has
on-going work that affects several of the playing fields. The works are
scheduled to be completed by end June. However, in the event LTA decides
additional work is required, SSC and we have no control over it. We have
been trying to work something out in the last couple of months. But, as you
may well imagine, convincing two public sector behemoths that Ultimate takes
precedence over extensive public works is as challenging as out-partying
Bangkok or Manila.

We are exploring alternative venues as backup options. Regrettably, not many
sites are suitable for an event like the Singapore Open, with considerations
for space, field condition, accessibility, nearby amenities, costs etc. For
those with slightly longer memories of the Singapore Open, the Marina South
and Sentosa Island venues have long ago been replaced with "development" .

I acknowledge this situation is far from ideal -- certainly not what you
would like to hear. We are not happy either. We are trying to fix things
soonest possible and will update you when we can. In the meantime, please
accept my apologies for the inconvenience to your travel plans.

 Hello Asian Ultimate,

A heads-up: the Singapore Open 2009 is very likely on August 8-9 at the
Farrer Park fields (same as last year). We'll update again when it's
confirmed.

The dates are earlier than previous editions. We understand it may affect
some folks on their summer holidays. Unfortunately, our options this year
are severely limited by the availability of fields (totally dependent upon
the Singapore Sports Council) and the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan from
Aug 21st to Sept 19th.

Format, we are looking at:

   - Mixed division (gender ratio 4/3 or 3/4, offence calls)
   - Open division if there's sufficient demand & space
   - A/B or seeded pools depending on the level & number of teams

To help with our planning, please would you let us know the interest from
your teams -- probable numbers and playing level?

Many thanks!!
