What is the matrix?

The Matrix is a new way of playing Ultimate. It’s basically cutthroat in a
tournament format.

Cutthroat is what we sometimes play at pick-up on Sundays, where we make
three teams, and winner stays, loser sits out a point.

The rules of ultimate are not going to change at all, we are simply adding
the ‘cutthroat’ element. If your team keeps winning, you’ll keep racking up
points, but you’ll get tired. If you wanna rest, that’s okay...you just
gotta lose first.



Why should we enter the matrix?

This is a more dramatic, team-oriented way to play Ultimate. It’s more
dramatic because of the inherent tension between scoring and resting, as
well as the added factor of a game clock – we play to time, not to points.

At the same time, it’s more team oriented. You score, rest, win and lose as
a whole, undivided unit. The captain can’t just put in the experienced
players, because there are no subs!



Why a half-day hat?

Since this is a completely new format, we’re doing a half-day hat with
shorter game times to try it out. If it’s successful, we might apply it to
bigger tournaments...
